Design software AMRetain™

AMRetain™ is a design software developed solely for the design of steel sheet piling structures using ArcelorMittal's range. AMRetain is a quite versatile design software, based on a Subgrade Reaction Model (also known as Soil Structure Interaction Model, or SSIM). The SSIM is an excellent compromise between quite simple design methods such as the Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM), and more complex ones such as the Finite Elements Method (FEM).

AMRetain does not replace ArcelorMittal’s free software Prosheet, which is based on a LEM method, and which can be used for simple preliminary designs. AMRetain also adds the option to design a sheet pile structure based on the European standards (Eurocodes).

ArcelorMittal's aim is to provide to the industry a valuable, user-friendly, and state-of-the-art software to design cost-effective steel sheet pile retaining walls. AMRetain is available at a reasonable price which covers only the cost of its distribution and technical support. The intent is not to compete with existing commercial software. The target are civil and geotechnical engineers with a basic knowledge of design of retaining structures, but who do not deal on a regular basis with the design of complex retaining structures, for which a SSIM is definitely more adequate than a LEM approach.

AMRetain allows designing cantilever walls, as well as single and multi-anchored (or propped) retaining walls. Furthermore, it can also calculate a double sheet pile wall with one or two anchor / strut level(s).

A key feature is the possibility to simulate the different construction phases, which is not possible with standard LEM based software.

The latest version 2.1 (December 2018) offers several design methods and new features:

  • design based on Eurocode 7, Part 1, Design Approach 1, 2 and 3. In theory, it can be used in any European country (partial safety factors can be adapted to the local NAD),
  • design based on the French standard NF P 94 282, which is the French National Annex of Eurocode 7, Part 1. It is based on Design Approach 2 from EN 1997-1, and uses the partial safety factors and some additional assumptions from the French standard. In this mode, the length of active anchors can also be determined,
  • design of a retaining wall with a SSIM model. In principle, this is the method that can be used with the Allowable Stress Design (ASD) method, which is based on a global safety approach (global safety factor),
  • verification of the anchor length for a double wall, based on the Kranz method,
  • seismic design (simplified approach).

Note that in their respective national annexes (NAD), every country is free to adapt some values proposed in Eurocode 7 (Nationally Determined Parameters), like the partial safety factors.

Besides, the user can either work in ‘metric’ units (SI system) or in ‘imperial’ units (usual units in the United States).

AMRetain works in a Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 7 and following versions). It is based on KRea, a commercial software developed by the French company Terrasol (www.terrasol.fr).

If you already have a previous version activated on your computer, you can download the installation file of the new version 2.1 and install it on your computer (link to ArcelorMittal’s website).
